Bald and Beautiful Barbie

There is a lobbying campaign that is asking toy maker Mattel to create a new type of doll. The would like to see a Barbie doll that is completely bald. This doll could help raise the self-esteem of girls who have lost their hair due to chemotherapy, (or for other medical reasons). Lots of little girls, (and some little boys), play with Barbie dolls. Since the doll was first created, Barbie has been considered to be an example of what it means to be beautiful. Sure, Barbie’s proportions are not something that match up to what real women actually look … Continue reading

The Barbie

The day finally arrived. The little girls were all playing on the lawn, one of them with a tub of Barbies that they could almost sit in, another with a fold-out Barbie house. My daughter was playing with them. She came in and declared, “I want a Barbie!” As someone who struggled on the edge of an eating disorder in my teens, I want to foster a good body image in my daughter. Then again, I don’t believe in making certain toys off limits, because I believe that will lead to a child who covets that toy. I had simply … Continue reading

To Barbie or Not To Barbie?

A recent conversation between friends got me thinking about Barbies. Actually, it’s the time of year when many parents are thinking about Barbies, struggling in lineups to purchase a coveted Barbie, hiding Barbie boxes in the closet…. The conversation goes something like this: “My kid wants a Barbie.” “Oh, no, you can’t get her a Barbie! Those are terrible for her future body image!” First parent hurriedly makes an excuse and slinks away in quiet humiliation, unable to defend her choice of toy. Ah, Barbie, the creator of controversy. The doll who is hated by many and adored by just … Continue reading

Barbie Ban—Yea or Nay?

A West Virginia lawmaker recently introduced legislation calling for a ban on Barbie dolls in the Mountain State. The pretty, plastic blonde is an icon in the toy world, yet her legendary status hasn’t stopped Lincoln County Delegate, Jeff Eldridge from wanting her to disappear from his neck of the woods. If Eldridge gets his way Barbie will be banned from West Virginia store shelves. Oh, and Eldridge says parents will thank him for it. “I just hate the image that we give to our kids that if you’re beautiful, you’re beautiful and you don’t have to be smart and … Continue reading

Would You Buy Your Preschooler a “Twilight” Barbie?

I wouldn’t. And not just because my preschool daughter isn’t into Barbies and has no clue that twilight is something other than the time of day immediately following sunset. Actually, I’m not quite sure she knows that twilight has anything to do with the sun at all. Regardless, Mattel will be disappointed that they won’t be scoring 25 bucks from my bank account in the near future. Your wallet, on the other hand, might not be so lucky. If your child is obsessed with Edward and Bella, brace yourself. Mattel has decided to make a few bucks from the Twilight … Continue reading

Sleeping With Barbie

I’ve written about the real-life Barbie Malibu Dream House, but now fans of the iconic blonde Jill of all trades have another travel destination to add to their summer vacation list: the Barbie Suite in Las Vegas. The Palms Casino Resort, known for its Fantasy Tower, which features mega-suites that include bowling lanes, basketball courts and indoor swimming pools, is now home to a Barbie wonderland. The hotel’s newest addition, dubbed the Barbie Suite, is 2,350-square-feet of pure girly fun. In addition to a sprawling pink bedroom, complete with a princess bed decked out in pink satin sheets and powdery … Continue reading

Hannah Montana Will Return For Another Season

Get excited Hannah Montana fans…It looks like the popular Disney show Hannah Montana will be back for a fourth season. The Disney Channel reportedly struck a deal this week to continue the series which stars teenage pop-star Miley Cyrus as “Hannah.” If you’re not familiar with the series, the premise is that Hannah is a pop star who is trying to attend regular school and live life as a “normal kid” rather than a celebrity. Shooting for the third season of the show just wrapped this week, so a guaranteed fourth season will mean there’s much more Miley in store … Continue reading

It’s a Barbie and Bratz Smackdown

It seemed inevitable that the two toy titans would clash. No, I don’t mean Superman and Batman, but Barbie and those annoying Bratz! And, millions of hard earned consumer dollars are at stake. I just heard of this doll catfight recently, but the trial has been going on for about a month now. Mattel Inc. has brought an infringement case against Bratz manufacturers MGA Entertainment Inc. Mattel claimed that 39 year old Bratz creator, Carter Bryant, created the Bratz dolls and name while still working for them as a Barbie designer. Mattel brought out the big guns to prove their … Continue reading
