The Ongoing Saga of the Christmas Hamper

Since my daughter is beginning to realize that she’s not the center of the universe, although she’s an important part of it, I thought that this Christmas would be a good one to talk about being thankful and helping others. As a family, we volunteer with an organization that helps provide fresh fruit and vegetables for those in need. We also support a foster child and do a Christmas hamper for a family every year. My daughter has never participated completely in the Christmas hamper. Last year she was aware that we were doing it, but she wasn’t particularly interested. … Continue reading

Celebrating Human Rights, Preschool-Style

My pregnancy announcement to a group of my friends was a little obscure. For many years, I’ve been involved in human rights work, and about five years ago I stood up at a group of friends and announced that we’d have a new member joining our group the next June. They were a tad baffled, but since 2005 my daughter has been involved in celebrating and working for human rights. She’s drawn many pictures for people around the world, and the occasional letter of the alphabet as well. Many people think that human rights work. It isn’t, really. Whatever your … Continue reading

Reflecting Empathy

I am a very empathetic person. I say this not to brag, but because it is not always a good thing, especially when you’re parenting an emotional four-year-old. While empathy is something that we try to stir up in our children, especially when they are young and they are just discovering that other people have feelings, it’s sometimes a characteristic that I need to temper. I’ll tell you why. Lately, my daughter has been having a very hard time going to preschool and separating from me in general. This involves a vast meltdown into a screaming puddle of four-year-old. My … Continue reading

Hunters and Gatherers Be Wary – Some Reused Children’s Products Can Be Dangerous

We had a Storkcraft drop side crib. The cribs were also sold under the Fisher Price label, and they are now the focus of a massive recall across the US and Canada due to concerns about. Thankfully, with a preschooler our crib days are long behind us. However, I now have a lingering sense of guilt. Like many others, we sold our lovely crib through a consignment store, and the people who purchased it will now have to retrofit the crib to make it safe. This got me thinking, though. I am a dedicated reuse advocate. The hunting and gathering … Continue reading

I’ve Got The Power

No, this is not about power struggles with your preschooler. Tonight the power went out at our house. This is a rather uncommon occurrence here. It was very exciting. It was thrillingly scary. We got the flashlight and the candles and ten minutes later the power went back on. However, the most interesting part of the whole episode was what my daughter said to me when the lights went out. “Mom, turn on your light, please!” You see, I have insulin-dependent diabetes, and I wear an insulin pump. My pump comes with a built-in backlight. This is very useful for … Continue reading

Photo Books By Your Preschooler

I hid myself downstairs tonight. Some might say this was due to a particularly nasty bout of “I’m a four-year-old-with-attitude,” but it was actually due to my work on a Secret Project. The secret project is something that my daughter and I do every year. Every so often, I would call her down into the depths of the basement to ask her about colors, change text, and confirm the visuals. What was I doing? I was creating her annual photo book. The year my daughter was born, I put together a photo book of her first six months and gave … Continue reading
