Potty Learning On The Go

Tomorrow, the boys and I are headed out of town for the weekend. We are going to Maine to stay at my husband’s parents’ cottage, which just happens to be located less than an hour from the town where my favorite fair is being held this weekend. The trip would take about six hours, if we drove non stop. I have no idea how long it will actually take us, nor do I have any expectations of getting there at a certain time. You see, this trip could take a while because Dylan is on an important journey of his … Continue reading

The Potty Learning Journey Continues

Today, Dylan took another step in the direction of declaring his independence from diapers. The way that we are approaching potty learning with Dylan is to let him lead the way. Yesterday I casually mentioned to him that we would be going shopping for clothes soon. He asked me if he could get real underwear. I told him that since he was doing well with learning to use the potty, we could get some underwear because we do not go shopping that often and we would want to have the underwear close by for when he was ready to use … Continue reading

Learning the Real Rules of Life

I recently finished reading “The Real Rules of Life: Balancing Life’s Terms with Your Own” by Ken Druck, sent to me in exchange for a review. This is probably one of the most life-impacting books I have ever read. In fact, I plan on reading it again but taking more time with it. There was so much to take in and the opportunity to really apply what you read. I greatly appreciate not only the effort that went into this book but the heart as well. “The Real Rules of Life” was written after the author’s loss of his 21-year-old … Continue reading

Visits With Relatives Are The Start Of A Child’s Genealogy Journey

As parents, we want our children to grow up with a strong sense of family. We want them to know where they came from just as much as we want them to discover who they are. There are many things that we do as parents that develop that sense of family, and many times we do them without even thinking about it. Each time you arrange for your children to spend time with their grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, and other relatives you are creating opportunities for them to build relationships with those relatives as well as opportunities for learning more … Continue reading

Learning to Say No

I typically don’t have a problem saying no to people. I guess that’s because I am a pretty organized, detailed person who likes plans, schedules and routines. So if something is going to distract me from what I need to, I can generally say no to it. However, what I have noticed recently is that where I do struggle to say no is when something is related to my line of work. Once it gets out there that you are a professional in some field, you may suddenly find others in need of advice or help. This has happened to … Continue reading

Learning the Lingo – Unschooling

When I first heard the term “unschooling,” I thought it meant to take knowledge from the things around you without necessarily sitting down to study. As I have looked more into various ways of homeschooling, I’ve come to understand this term a bit more. According to The Unschooling Handbook by Mary Griffith, “Unschooling… means learning what one wants, when one wants, in the way one wants, where one wants, for one’s own reasons.” This was an eye-opener for me—to learn what you want to learn, when and how you want to learn it. Is this possible? Can you really do … Continue reading

Starting a Brand-New Journey

Have you ever gotten to a point where you know things aren’t working, but you aren’t sure what to do about it? You know you’re on the right path, but suddenly you feel a little unsure, like you’ve lost your sense of direction and you aren’t sure how to find it again? This has been my experience for the last year as I’ve contemplated my decision to homeschool. I have no doubt whatsoever that this is the right choice for me and my family. At the risk of sounding melodramatic, when I consider sending my children to public school, I … Continue reading

The Learning Journey

We are lucky to have lots of older cousins in our family. So, we have inherited lots of fun toys as the cousins have cleaned out their closets. One of my daughter’s favorite things to do in her spare time is puzzles. She has loved them forever! One puzzle we inherited is made by the company, The Learning Journey. They make educational toys and products for children, and they are great for any preschooler. We have one puzzle that we inherited from an older cousin called The Giant ABC-123 Train. This puzzle is a train that your child puts together … Continue reading

On Trust and Home Learning

Home learning can be a leap of faith. To homeschool, you need to trust. You need to trust that you can teach your children. You may not have a teaching certificate, but you have been teaching your children since they were born. You may have a teaching certificate but feel that your relationship with your children makes it challenging to teach them. This could be true. You need to trust that you can work through this. This means that you put aside feelings of failure or challenges from your own schooling and believe that you can learn what you want … Continue reading
