Protecting Preschoolers from Choking

Dealing with a picky preschooler at the dinner table may be the least of your concerns, according to a new study.  Instead of stressing about your child’s refusal to eat his veggies, researchers warn parents that they should be carefully monitoring four year olds while they chow down on classic kid favorites, like hot dogs, as the number of choking incidents among preschool-aged children is dangerously high. Researchers say a staggering 34 children a day are admitted to hospital emergency rooms due to choking.  That translates to more than 12,000 emergency room visits a year, though the study’s author notes … Continue reading

The Big Picture: Addressing Challenging Topics With Your Preschooler

The world can be a deeply scary place. Death, terrorism, climate change, extinction…do you tell your preschooler the details, or do you shield your preschooler from all knowledge of these events? I tend to be a tell-all kind of gal, with a focus on making the information accessible to a preschooler. Sometimes I wonder if I’m doing the right thing by talking about the “big scaries” at all, though. When my daughter asks me if I will die, we have a good discussion about it. I don’t try to scare her, but I do try to be realistic. I will … Continue reading

Do You Give Your Preschooler An Allowance?

When my grandfather was ill, I wrote him letters. He was always the master of business finance, since he owned his own business for more than half a century. In my last letter to him, I mentioned that I had just instituted an allowance for my two and a half year old. I thought that he would enjoy the fact that I was teaching financial management to my child. My mother read the letter to him and she cracked up when it came to the sentence about the allowance. Yes, she gave me an allowance when I was growing up … Continue reading

Talking About Death With Your Preschooler

Today, I spent a lot of the day in the hospital with my daughter. We were visiting a family member who has cancer. I had mixed feelings about taking my daughter, mostly because I knew that others would be around who might be upset about her questions about death. It’s hard to stop a four-year-old from asking questions, even if they aren’t socially appropriate at that particular time. Everything went well. We came with a small gift she had made, she went for a little walk around the hospital, and I chatted. I know that at some point, our relative … Continue reading

Baby Blog Month in Review: July 2008

Two of my three children are summer babies. That is, they were born in the summer and had their first months surrounded by sunshine streaming in the windows, the sound of birds chirping, and days spent wearing nothing but a diaper and a “onsie.” I made sure that they had Fourth of July outfits ready, even though one of them arrived a week after the holiday. I guess he just wasn’t interested in the parade. Do you have a summer baby, too? We had a lot of new information to share this past month, such as recall notices and new … Continue reading

Benefits of a Mom Mentor

From the time that little baby is placed in a woman’s arms, she is expected to know everything she needs to know about caring for a child from pure instinct. Any new scientific developments can be learned from books. But when you are in the trenches, it is pretty clear that there are a lot of situations that can come up that leave you bewildered. Having a mom mentor can be a wonderful means of support and reassurance. What is a mom mentor? A mom mentor is a mom who may be slightly older or at least has a few … Continue reading
