Tips and Tricks for a Healthy Mommy

Taking care of your children when you are sick can be more than challenging as a single parent. There’s no one there to take care of the kids while you are stuck in bed. You have no choice but to do it yourself. While getting sick is inevitable, here are some tips and tricks to keep it from happening quite as often. Start with cutting down on your stress load. The more stressed you are the more susceptible you are to illness. As a single parent this may seem nearly impossible since you are doing the work of two, but … Continue reading

Mommy’s Little Helper…Sort of

I have been blessed with a child who loves to help; I mean really loves to help. If Mommy is trying to fold the laundry he thinks he needs to “fold” too. After which he promptly feels the need to jump into each of the piles, because what’s the sense in folding laundry if you’re not going to jump in it afterward, right? At three years old, he loves to sweep, mop, vacuum, clean bathrooms, do laundry, and just about anything else around the house. Having him “help” may take me three times as long, but he is learning little … Continue reading

Sick Days

It’s that time of year, the time when everyone is getting sick. Tonight in Utah we are supposed to get our first freeze of the year but it seems that everyone is getting sick ahead of the really cold weather. It sucks when your child is sick, when you are feeling under the weather it’s even worse. For the past few days my back has been bothering me. Annoying but I’ll live. Now Hailey has the stomach flu and I feel something catching up with me. I’m very run down and just want to sleep. Not at all possible when … Continue reading

Mommy Secrets Revealed

If you were anywhere near the Internet today, then you likely saw the headliner of the summer courtesy of NBC’s Today show: “Moms Confess Their Deepest, Darkest Secrets.” Ooooooooohhhh! The mere title is enough to raise one’s hair, blood pressure… and more importantly, traffic on the morning show’s website. If you were like millions of curious moms around the world, once you clicked on the “Secrets” link, you learned that the confessions had little to do with tawdry trysts with the neighbor’s pool boy or a panache for pilfering Pina Colada mix from the in-laws. Rather, the top-secret secrets moms … Continue reading

Mommy Crushes

Grown women go gaga over 16-year-old pop star Justin Bieber… there’s just something inherently wrong with that scenario. And I’m not the only one who thinks so. Did you see the episode of “Saturday Night Live” where Tina Fey played a high school teacher smitten with a student played by Bieber? “I don’t know whether I want to marry him or put him in a stroller and push him around the mall,’’ Fey’s character ponders in a dreamy baby girl voice-over. So much for motherhood being connected with adulthood… and completely disconnected to youth culture. These days moms are getting … Continue reading

Feeling Airsick?

I’m not a very good flier. The slightest bump leaves me clutching the arm rests, heart thudding and sweaty. But one thing I’ve never done is actually needed to use the barf bag in the seat pocket. I do, however, tend to get motion sickness. It’s worse in a car than in a plane, but I still experience some of the symptoms. If you get airsick, here are a few tips to help soothe your stomach (and other body parts). Bring peppermint or ginger candies with you. These are two traditional remedies for an upset stomach that really work! When … Continue reading

Mommy Burn Out

Anyone who knows me will tell you that I’m a relative energizer bunny. I rarely slow down and even when I’m sick, I’m still going. I hate to be idle. . .the worst weekend or vacation in the world for me, would consist of sitting around just “being”. Even in the early days of my twins, I swore I was getting nothing done and while my house might not have been a vision of pristine, those around me kind of watched dumb founded as I homeschooled, had dinner done, and kept sanity and peace among five children under the age … Continue reading

Taking Care of Kids When You’re Sick

No sooner had I finished writing about recharging our batteries when I was hit with a summer cold that has kept me in bed for the past two days. Seems like when I was younger I could shake a cold in a few hours now it takes days! Being sick, even with something as simple as a summer cold, can be challenging when you’re a parent. This is especially true when you are a single parent with young kids. Let’s face it, kids are sugar and spice and all that jazz but they don’t feel our pain. And even when … Continue reading

“Mommy, I Don’t Feel Good!”

It may very well be the most dreaded phrase that could be uttered from the back seat during a long car trip. (Other than “Mom, Bobby is bleeding.”) Motion sickness… car sickness… whatever you want to call it, the after effects can put a real damper on your family’s summer road trip. So what can we do to help our young travelers (and more mature ones) from experiencing that awful queasy feeling during long car rides and on stomach turning thrill rides? Well, first, doctors say we need to stop blaming our stomachs. Studies show it’s the brain not the … Continue reading
