Shaming is Never the Answer

Something I have been trying to focus on as a parent of a preschooler is not to make my child feel ashamed about bad behavior and herself. That’s a hard thing to do. However, I want her to grow up to be a strong, confident woman, that loves herself. I feel like shaming can harm the spirit of young children. It seems like I’ve heard a lot in the media lately about mothers doing just that. There was one Mom who made her teenage son stand on a street corner with a sign for several hours a day, reading, “I … Continue reading

Yesterday, Tomorrow, and The Other Day

One thing that is so fun about having a child this age is their perception of time. They don’t really have much perception of time at all! They hear phrases from us like, “give me two minutes” or “Just a minute” and they don’t really know what that means. Trying to explain to your preschooler about an event in the future is equally as hard. We are taking a trip next week, and I’ve been trying to explain to my daughter that the trip is still a week away. Every time we get in the car, she asks me if … Continue reading

Summer Work

Summer is fast approaching. I can hardly believe it! My daughter is going to miss going to preschool so much. She loves it, and is learning so much. She will be starting Kindergarten in the fall, and that seems equally as astonishing to me! However, the truth is, that she is almost 5, and school is just around the corner. I want to keep her busy this summer, but more importantly, I want to keep her busy with learning! So, I decided to visit my local school supply store to see what kind of things I could get her to … Continue reading

A 12 Hour Car Trip

I am about to take a 12 hour car trip with my two kiddos. Traveling with children is hard no matter how old they are, and unfortunately, in today’s economy, more and more people are hitting the roads as a way to save money. I am traveling to visit my sister just 2 states over, but I’m sure when I get in the car with two kids, ages 4 and 2, it will feel like worlds away. This will be the first time I have ever embarked on an adventure like this. And, to be honest, it sounds a little … Continue reading

A Dyslexic Point of View

I am a dyslexic. This was not something I realized until after I was an adult. It is my understanding that it can be frustrating to be the parent of a dyslexic child, if you don’t know from personal experience why your obviously smart child continues to make the same mistakes over and over again. I might be able to clarify that for you, by sharing what it is like to be a dyslexic person in an non-dyslexic world. Dyslexia is a learning disability. Some of the signs that a person may be dyslexic include frequent transposition of letters, (or … Continue reading

Are There Areas of Your Business You Are Avoiding?

We all have places where we shine in our home business, and areas where we would just rather not focus. For some of us, we avoid keeping care of our finances and paying the bills, for others, it might be marketing that sends us running to the nearest distraction. With so much to do in the average home based business, we can hide out and avoid some of the tasks we don’t want to face for a good while. Eventually, however, those neglected areas will need our attention. The big question to ask yourself is “Why?” Why are you avoiding … Continue reading
