Reading, It Just Clicked!

My daughter has got it figured out. No, she can’t read perfectly just yet, but she is DYING to be able to read. It all started about a month ago when she came home from preschool and told me a boy in her class could already read. I responded saying that she will learn too, very soon. She just has to keep practicing her letters. Then, it was like one day it just clicked! She just figured out that letters made sounds, and put those sounds together, and voila! You have words. So, now she is unstoppable. She wants to … Continue reading

Finding Fantasyland Website Mini-Game

Now that Fantasyland is about to debut, I received an email in my Inbox: an invitation to take a Hero’s Journey to discover the new Fantasyland.  This was per my sign up from the New Fantasyland website. Taking the Hero’s Journey doesn’t tell us a lot about the new Fantasyland, but it’s a cute story nonetheless.  Visiting the site sucks guests into the story, telling about how the villains came to Fantasyland, stole powerful talismans, and obscured them with their magic (which just so happens to take the shape of a big puffy purple mist, just like in Disney-ABC’s “Once … Continue reading

Sick of Blue Cross

We recently cancelled our health insurance policy. This is the sort of decision that can cause some people to feel a certain amount of regret. It is difficult to feel regretful about canceling insurance from a company that has inspired a website called “Sick of Blue Cross”. There was just enough time between when we got approved for health insurance, and when the policy actually “kicked in” for me to do some research about it. I went through the booklets that the insurance company sent me with a fine tooth comb. I called my dentist and my doctor, and directly … Continue reading

Starting a Brand-New Journey

Have you ever gotten to a point where you know things aren’t working, but you aren’t sure what to do about it? You know you’re on the right path, but suddenly you feel a little unsure, like you’ve lost your sense of direction and you aren’t sure how to find it again? This has been my experience for the last year as I’ve contemplated my decision to homeschool. I have no doubt whatsoever that this is the right choice for me and my family. At the risk of sounding melodramatic, when I consider sending my children to public school, I … Continue reading

Play Dates

This week we are on Spring Break from my daughter’s preschool. In an effort to keep her entertained and busy, I scheduled play dates, and ended up with one for everyday of the week this week! I thought, that’s just crazy! But, it’s interesting to watch how she plays with each of these children in a different way. Our first play date was with a friend in our neighborhood. This little girl is a few months older than my daughter, and used to go to the same preschool. She recently made the decision to stop going, and my daughter has … Continue reading

Eat Already!!

One of my most frustrating things as a parent right now is meal time. It seems like my two year old and four year old get up to the table, eat a few bites, and then just want to play. They will stay in their chairs and make silly faces, or silly noises, and make the other one laugh. They don’t pay attention to the task in front of them…eating. It’s driving me insane!! I noticed the problem with eating begin several months ago. Now that my 2 year old is more fun to play with, his big sister takes … Continue reading

Community Ed Classes for Your Preschooler

When a child is preschool age, they are trying to develop their own personal talents and interests. I know that my daughter is interested and excited about pretty much everything! If you mention soccer to her, she is all over it. Want to do dance? Gymnastics? Piano? Karate? Yes!!! is always the reply. While many parents have the means to put their kids in a myriad of extracurricular activities, many parents, like myself, do not. So, I struggle with knowing what she will like, and what will be “worth” the money. One way I have resolved this issue is through … Continue reading

Yesterday, Tomorrow, and The Other Day

One thing that is so fun about having a child this age is their perception of time. They don’t really have much perception of time at all! They hear phrases from us like, “give me two minutes” or “Just a minute” and they don’t really know what that means. Trying to explain to your preschooler about an event in the future is equally as hard. We are taking a trip next week, and I’ve been trying to explain to my daughter that the trip is still a week away. Every time we get in the car, she asks me if … Continue reading

Spanish Speaking Kindergarten

Today, my husband and I went to check out a Kindergarten class at the school that my daughter will most likely be attending in the fall. This class was a little different than your average Kindergarten class because it was a Spanish immersion program. I went away with mixed feelings about what was right for my preschooler. In our school district, you have to get ready for Kindergarten early. This includes testing your child for the Extended Learning Program, which can be compared to a gifted program in other school districts. Not every elementary school offers these classes, and they … Continue reading
