Memorize Scriptures

When was the last time you memorized a scripture? For me, I know exactly when it was. It was on my mission. I’ve been home for almost 11 years now. In Sunday school this past week, the teacher gave us a challenge. We were talking about Christ being tempted by Satan after he had been fasting 40 days and 40 nights. We were talking about how he was tempted with every type of temptation that we face in this life. The physical temptations, the pride, and the temptation of power. Each of our temptations in this life can be placed … Continue reading

Memorize It!

I have been amazed at how many things my preschooler is memorizing at school. She is like a sponge and learning so much, and luckily, she has a great teacher who is positive and gives them lots of positive things to learn and think about. After her first couple of weeks at school, she was sitting at the table eating her lunch after school, and then turned to me and quoted Ralph Waldo Emerson. She even said his name at the end of the quote! I turned to her and said, “Wait. What did you say?” And she repeated it … Continue reading

Some Things Just Need to be Memorized

I have a master’s degree in teaching mathematics. In many and most of my college graduate level courses we discussed the reasoning behind why we do the things that we do, mathematically speaking. The idea is not to teach the children that two times three is six but teach them why by showing the process of addition. All other mathematical concepts were also presented in this way. We kept math journals and recorded our mathematical thinking through difficult word problems and math puzzles. I agree with the concept that children will learn and remember if they understand why. However, the … Continue reading

5 Tricks to Get Your Kids to Memorize Math Facts

I have written before about my son who is intuitively “smart” in all things math and science. He is the type of kid who frankly, doesn’t need to memorize his math facts. He just ‘gets it’ and the extra reinforcement isn’t necessary. However, my daughter needs the reinforcement of drilling through math facts in order to gain ‘number sense’. Unfortunately, I think it goes against every grain in my being to do rote drills. I don’t even like workbooks because I think they are too “rote”. Just because you want your kids to learn their math facts though, doesn’t mean … Continue reading

Why Memorize?

Yesterday, I suggested that you work on memorizing (or rememorizing) the scripture mastery verses. You may have asked, why? What is the purpose of memorizing scriptures? I would recommend everyone, from the youth down to retired folks, take the time to memorize some scripture. These verses can come in very handy. We know that the Lord speaks to us through scriptures. A non-LDS, Christian friend I know calls the Bible “God’s love letter to us.” What a wonderful way to think of scriptures! We know, too, that the Book of Mormon was written by prophets of old especially for our … Continue reading

Helping Children Memorize the Books of the Bible

Memorization can often be a frustrating task, even for adults. Children could certainly use some help regarding the memorization of the books of the Bible (there are 66 books after all). (Actually many adults could use some help regarding the memorization of the books of the Bible too!) Here is an activity that I developed to help the children in my Bible school class learn the books of the Bible. You will need just a couple of simple materials. First, you need a strip of paper with each book of the Bible written on it (I printed it out on … Continue reading

Making Math Fun

Just because your child doesn’t easily makes sense of math now, doesn’t mean he’s doomed to fail as a future number cruncher.  There are plenty of kids, who struggle with addition, subtraction, multiplication and division in their early years, and then something finally clicks, and they end up as successful accountants or actuaries. To ensure that your homeschooled student achieves success in the world of mathematics, don’t rely solely on memorization.  Having children memorize math facts without teaching them why the answer is correct often leads to future problems. Kids will be much more receptive to learning math if you … Continue reading

Make the Most of Summer Travel

Featured

Whether you homeschool year-round or take time off during the summer months don’t let the season of sunny days fly by without a few fun lessons. Family road trips are the ideal vehicle for hands-on learning.  Rather than allow your kids to blow travel time watching movies, playing video games or annoying their siblings have them master geography using colorful flashcards or practice math facts using your vehicle’s odometer and mile markers along the highway. By involving the entire family in some interactive “car-schooling” your kids will have the states and capitals memorized in no time.  To test your children’s memory … Continue reading

Flying Solo

My baby is gone. She learned how to ride a two-wheeler and took off. It’s a mother’s worst nightmare. Your child is ready to spread her wings, but you just want to smother those growing appendages in a bear hug and hold on for dear life. This summer, my little fledgling was itching to take flight and she used her beloved bike to soar… far away from home. Too far. Way too far. What started out as a request to ride solo to the end of our cul-de-sac morphed into a journey stretching several blocks into an unfamiliar neighborhood filled … Continue reading

Meghan Wins Spelling Bee With “Humility”

A Spelling Bee is a traditional academic contest. To win, you have to know how to correctly spell more words than the rest of the participants are able to. A nine-year-old named Meghan McCarty just won a Spelling Bee. She has autism and cerebral palsy and is part of a mainstream classroom of students. How well do you spell? Is your writing mostly typo-free, or do you heavily rely on the spellchecker? Read the comment section under any article on a major newspaper of your choice, and it is abundantly clear that plenty of people do not feel that being … Continue reading
