Learning the Alphabet Part I

I am of the opinion, especially after teaching for five years, that learning should occur in the context of everyday living spurred by curiosity and creativity.  Learning should be fun and easy and never forced … if it can be helped. From the moment I found out the I was pregnant with my first baby, I was thinking about how and when I would start to introduce guided learning.   The most important and paramount concern that I had was finding a way to make learning fun and avoid the sense of dread and boredom that tends to come with formal … Continue reading

The Learning Journey

We are lucky to have lots of older cousins in our family. So, we have inherited lots of fun toys as the cousins have cleaned out their closets. One of my daughter’s favorite things to do in her spare time is puzzles. She has loved them forever! One puzzle we inherited is made by the company, The Learning Journey. They make educational toys and products for children, and they are great for any preschooler. We have one puzzle that we inherited from an older cousin called The Giant ABC-123 Train. This puzzle is a train that your child puts together … Continue reading

ABCs and 123s

As a toddler parent, should I be singing the ABCs and 123s more than I do? I am always singing and talking to Jessie, but I forget these basic songs. We have a number of toys that stress the alphabet and Jessie enjoys playing with them. I still feel I should do more. Today in Gymboree we had a substitute teacher. Kyle is really energetic and a lot of fun. He’s been training at our location for a few weeks now. Jessie hasn’t been too keen on Kyle because she’s generally not OK with men other than daddy. She did … Continue reading

Rote and Repetition – Your Key to Toddler Learning

Repetition is one of the primary keys in teaching your toddler. While they may very well enjoy exploring the world around them, teaching them various things including their schedule, their ABCs and even the names of things is done by repeating it over and over and over again. Your 2 year old may very well be able to sing their ABCs and other nursery rhymes, not because they have an intellectual grasp on what they mean, but because they have heard them over and over and over again. This is why getting your baby and toddler into a routine is … Continue reading

YouTube started rolling out Kid Profiles on November 2, 2017. The purpose is to have a kid-safe YouTube Kids account that your child can use to access kid-friendly content. It also means that parents won’t have to share their YouTube account with their children anymore. YouTube explains the decision to create Kid Profiles this way: “After talking to parents all over, we know that kids who love the YouTube Kids app are getting older and want a platform that’ll grow with them. Whether kids are watching Monster High, DC Kids, LEGO, learning their ABCs, or picking up the latest tricks … Continue reading

Room Fairy: Begin in Preschool?

Is preschool too young for chores? Is it too young to keep a bedroom clean? No and no. A preschooler needs to begin learning chores and have a feeling of purpose in the home. No fun will equal struggling with chores. If you can get your child to complete chores the fun way then everyone wins. The chores become a habit and soon the games you play to encourage … Continue reading

Benefits of Music Therapy

We’ve all done it – used music to learn or remember some bit of information. Think back to how you learned the alphabet. It was to a sweet little tune called the ABCs. Music Therapy is defined as the clinical and evidence-based use of music interventions to accomplish goals.
