Are You Giving Your Kids the Kiss of Death?

I am more J.Crew than JLo or JWoww. I prefer khakis to skinny jeans and respectable cardigans to revealing camisoles. And that goes double for cosmetics. If it were not for the fact that I have skin like a Shar-Pei and a daughter that I am forced not to embarrass in public, I would probably go without make-up every. single. day. While I am far from a Japanese Kabuki actor, I do apply some foundation, mascara and eyeliner on days I am required to venture beyond my driveway. If I forget to add one or more of the aforementioned cosmetics … Continue reading

Plant a Kiss on Valentine’s Day

What happens when you plant a kiss… in the ground, not on your sweetheart’s cheek? Will it blossom and grow into something unfathomably dazzling? New York Times bestselling author Amy Krouse Rosenthal and award-winning illustrator Peter H. Reynolds have the answer in a simple yet sweet picture book–Plant a Kiss–that’s a perfect Valentine’s Day read. The book begins with Little Miss planting a kiss in an unremarkable patch of dirt. The young girl watches and waits, waits and watches, and then waits some more. After some doubting and pouting, finally, there’s some shouting, as a tiny sprout emerges from the … Continue reading

Kiss My Face

Lately, I have been doing a lot of research on ingredients in health and beauty products. I already buy many organic food items and try to focus on healthy choices. On one visit to the health food store a woman who worked there told me that if you change anything it should be your health and beauty products. She understood my concerns about the cost of going organic and wanting to prioritize. She informed me that anything you put on your skin gets absorbed right into the blood stream. There is no filtering or protection such as with your liver … Continue reading

The Kissing Hand

Logan and I have started a little ritual whenever he goes to his dad’s now. We call it our “kissing hand.” When I was little my mother used to read me a book called “The Kissing Hand” by Audrey Penn. It is a touching story about a little raccoon about to start his first day of school. He expresses his fears at being away from his mother for the first time. She comes up with a sweet solution. She takes his palm in her hand and places a kiss in the center and holds it to his cheek. Whenever he … Continue reading

My Homeschool Now Includes a Teenager

On the 7th of this month, my daughter, who once spit up on me, asked me to kiss boo boos, and begged for one more bedtime story, turned 13. She has turned in teddy bears, tea sets, and crayons for a cell phone, Facebook page, and blog. The transformation has been occurring for quite some time but it never really hits until “teen” is the last syllable of the age. She is funny, smart, quick witted, discerning, trustworthy, and at times snotty, ungrateful and very teen. What I am most proud of is that she does not speak in a … Continue reading

When Peanut Butter Became the Enemy – Part 3

(Read part 1 and part 2 off this account first.) The aftermath of discovering my son’s food allergies was a blur of research and education. I was not only educating myself on the details of cooking and eating around a food allergy, but I was educating everyone in my son’s life that would be remotely involved in feeding him. If we went to a potluck, everyone there had to know that he could absolutely not have peanuts. People offer kids treats and cookies all the time at parties. I can tell you that I will never give a child food … Continue reading

Leaving my Baby with a Sitter

I left my daughter with a sitter for nearly 8 hours last week. In a row. For some of you, that’s a piece of cake. For those who know me well, it may as well have been a miracle. My husband and I were getting together with friends, and we decided our 10-month-old probably would much rather be at home playing with toys. We called up Grandma and Grandpa, who were more than willing to help us out in our time of need. When it was time to go, I kissed my baby goodbye without feeling any stress. I had … Continue reading

Rain or Shine, My Pets Are There

This hasn’t been a very easy year for me. In fact, of all my years on this Earth to date, this past one has been the most trying by far. And the most blues-filled. One After the Other It started last summer when we tried to move back to Jacksonville. Thankfully plans changed, but instead of life sailing along unencumbered as I’d hoped, I got sick in November –the same week Wayne moved home and we left to go to Denver for Thanksgiving. Then Wayne got sick, and I had a relapse and fell ill again. Come January and February … Continue reading

My Obsession with Baby Feet

Let’s face it, babies are cute even when they fill up their diapers. We all know that. But when it comes to baby feet, I am completely obsessed. I just love little baby feet. They are cute, compact and unlike adult feet, adorable. I love the little toes and the little flat arches that kick out in excitement. And yes, I even love the smell. People often talk about that great baby smell that you get when taking a whiff of a freshly washed warm little baby head, but I prefer the little feet. For one thing, there are two … Continue reading

Do You Kiss Your Pets Goodnight?

For a few years now Murph and I have had a routine whereby I snuggle up with him before I climb into bed. It started because he wasn’t always allowed to sleep on the bed with us so I’d sidle up next to him on the floor (he had a bed but he didn’t always start out sleeping on it at nights) and tell him what a great dog he’d been that day. These days he’s allowed to sleep with us on the bed, but he still starts out on the floor most nights. And if I don’t take a … Continue reading
