Is It a Spider Bite?

This past weekend was not that fun for me. Friday, my 8-year-old went to a party at a place that has the blowup jumpy houses. He came home, happy and full of birthday cake. Around 8:30, he came over to me to tell me something and I saw a white place on his arm with a red circle around it. Yikes – what was that on my son’s arm? I had his dad look at it and we called his grandpa, who used to be an EMT. After sending him a picture of it, he said it might be a … Continue reading

Benefits To Being A Single Parent

As a parent, every day I’m amazed to see the young woman my daughter is turning into. I think that is true for all parents, we look at our children and there is so much joy that we get to be a part of something so wonderful. As a single parent there is a little sadness mixed with that joy, sadness that our kids don’t get to grow up in an intact family, that Daddy doesn’t help tuck them in every night. But always there is joy and pride in watching them grow and seeing the men and women they … Continue reading

Disney’s Plans to Broaden its Appeal

I’ve written a lot about the Disney Princess culture, and how it’s experienced some backlash lately. Though Disney makes truckloads of money off its Princess brand, it also takes a hit from the brand due to how alienating it supposedly is for boys. While Disney is in the midst of expanding its Princess line, adding a larger fairy tale section and brand new Pixie Hollow to the Magic Kingdom, it’s also got some elaborate plans to draw young male interest. Some of these plans are already in place. For a few years now the Hollywood Studios at Disney World has … Continue reading

Toddler Emergency Room Visits

Have you ever thought of what you would need to do if your child was hurt or sick enough to be taken to the emergency room? Do you have a checklist of emergency information? I had never thought of what I would do in the event of an emergency until my son got seriously ill. My toddler has been sick and my only thought was to take him to our pediatrician. Now that the weekend is upon us and my son is getting worse, I am faced with thinking about a back-up plan. What would I do if he needed … Continue reading

Neil Young Gets His Own Spider

Hey, don’t step on that spider! It might be a Myrmekiaphila neilyoungi. A what? Yes, it is true – rocker Neil Young has had a spider named after him. Jason Bond, a biologist at East Carolina University, has discovered a new species of the trapdoor spider. When you discover a new species, you get the honor of naming it. Bond’s favorite musician is Neil Young, so voila – the Myrmekiaphila neilyoungi was born. Bond explained that while there are strict rules about how you name your new species, you could use any name you like as long as you follow … Continue reading

The Amazing Spider Head

You’ve probably heard of that OTHER amazing spider person… I’m not talking about him. I’m talking about me. There’s a disturbing new trend in my walks with Moose and Lally. A few days ago, the dogs wrapped me around a tree. Nothing new, really — Moose goes one way, Lally goes the other, and I have to do some quick juggling before we walk on. I ducked underneath a branch after swapping the leashes and… walked face first into a spider web. Being the brave, unflappable individual that I am, I screamed something like GAH or GUH and ducked away. … Continue reading

Travel Tidbits: End of An Era

I’ve told you about my childhood crush on Michael J. Fox (and Jason Bateman and Ricky Schroeder and…) in previous blogs. It’s tue; I’ve seen “Back to the Future” more times than most people have gone out to eat dinner. Which is why I was saddened to learn that the Universal Studios Hollywood ride based on the film trilogy that starred my beloved Michael (is a) Fox is officially a part of history. The ride took its final passengers yesterday and now is relegated to the past. (Sniff, sniff.) What’s even sadder is that the ride was closed to make … Continue reading

Spider Watching – Vivian French

I do not like spiders. They give me the creepy crawlies, the heebie-jeebies – you name it, they give it to me. However, there are some people who like them, and guess what – my daughter is one of them. She finds insects fascinating. She catches moths and releases them outside, rather than see them be killed. For children like her, I’m reviewing “Spider Watching,” by Vivian French. If this was a Tristi Pinkston book, it would be called, “Spider Squashing.” This picture book is set up in an interesting format. On the right page is a story, and on … Continue reading

Travel Tidbits—Healthy Amusement Parks and Happy Hybrid Owners

When you think of taking a trip to an amusement park what comes to mind? I think of rides and games, but mainly it’s the thought of sinking my teeth into cotton candy, hot dogs, gigantic soft pretzels, slushies, and ice cream that really gets me going. If you are like me and love to gorge on fair food you may want to ponder what some amusement park owners are doing at their sites this summer. They’re going healthy. When Rye Playland in New York opens this week guests will be seeing some drastic changes—the introduction of a healthy menu … Continue reading
