Baby Social Skills

One difficult stage in any baby’s life is the stage when they are more and more mobile, and still do not have the ability to communicate clearly. That is what we are currently facing with my 14 month old. He wants to be right in on the action with pretty much everything. He wants to be at our level while we are cooking so he can see what is going on. He wants to join in the fun with his siblings in their game of the moment. He wants to be able to communicate his feelings, but he just can’t. … Continue reading

The Busy Life of the Preschooler

Preschoolers are wonderful…think about it. They still think parents knows everything and they think we are perfect (though Grandpa is better). They still like to give kisses and the sweetest hugs for no reason (well, sometimes they do it for the cookie), and best of all they still want to cuddle. This morning, my Deanna, woke in the most loving mood; as she stumbled in the kitchen with her Dora the Explorer jammies turned sideways from the long night of sleep. She was funny to watch as she had tusseled hair–we call “bed head”–and three stuffed bunnies. She gave me … Continue reading

Is Sitting a Life Skill?

As adults, we sit a lot. I’m sitting as I write this. You’re likely sitting as you read it. In class, children are taught to sit much of the time. Yes, they get up and move around for physical education classes, but they’re not encouraged to jump up and down when the teacher is talking, most of the time. We just finished a quick weekend holiday, and this holiday involved several stints of sitting in the car for over an hour and two ferry rides that also involved their fair share of sitting. Since my daughter has never been skilled … Continue reading

Laziness part 4- In Service and Church Life

Moving house and church can be a time to take stock and review what activities God would have us involved in, so we found. Maybe you have too? Or do you think you’ve done your bit and it’s time to retire from God’s service? Since my husband retired from work, which prompted our move, we could have used it as an excuse to retire from serving God in our church as well. But God’s work doesn’t have an age when we must or should retire. So we knew we needed to be doing something but what? Instead of jumping in, … Continue reading

Free Websites that Teach Your Kids about Money

Teaching kids about money, where it comes from, how to make it grow and how to use it responsibly is one of those things that many of us mean to get around to doing, but don’t often seem to complete. In fact, money lessons should never really come to an end. As society, the economy and technology changes, it is important for us all to keep up, and pass on the skills, knowledge and advice to our children. Fortunately, we don’t have to do this alone. There are a few really good websites out there that will help us teach … Continue reading

More Mobile, More Aware, and More Wiggly

We have had a lot of changes around here with my little man. Just this past week he has started sitting up and at just about the same time, he has started to army crawl! I can’t believe it. He doesn’t make much progress yet, but if there is a toy on the floor in front of him, he is going to get it eventually. Luckily, he’s not too fast, so we can catch him before he grabs something he shouldn’t. This stage in a baby’s life is so fun, but it is also a lot more work. Finding ways … Continue reading

Mobile Baby

My daughter has entered a new phase of her life in the last few weeks. Gone are the days of sitting in one place, there is a whole new world for her to explore. The transition from immobile to mobile began when my daughter started to insist on laying on the floor. She did not want to be held and she did not want to sit in any kind of chair. At first she was perfectly content to grab on to her toes and put them into her mouth. With several colorful toys in her reach, she started kicking in … Continue reading

I Was An Entrepreneur and I Did Not Even Know It

Today, I realized that I had been preparing myself for life as an entrepreneur long before I had even heard of the word. I was reading this blog post by my co – blogger Richele McFarlin about businesses that kids can start, and I realized that I had started babysitting for neighbors as soon as I was old enough to take a babysitting class. Sure, I had other jobs during high school and even during college, but I always had at least a few babysitting clients. When I started out as a babysitter, I was simply watching the neighbor’s children … Continue reading
