The First Training Wheels

I’ve recently realized that training wheels are not just for your first bicycle. Training wheels are everywhere you look. I’m spending a summer reading way too many pages for a test that is way to big and vague. I’ve got training wheels though. I’m learning from others who have done it before me. I’m taking tips from masters and advice from anyone willing to lend it. I’ve got an entire army of training wheels around me and I’m quite pleased to have them. Training wheels lead to success. So when our son now wants to grab hold of our fingers … Continue reading

Run Bike, Training Wheels, or Tricycle?

If you have a preschooler, you likely have some permutation of a bike. Perhaps it is a little rusted and very secondhand, or maybe it is new and shiny. However, if your preschooler has some wheels you may wonder what wheels are best for riding. If you are looking for a beginner’s bike, you may think first of the tricycle. These sturdy three-wheeled bikes are perfect for the tiny set and they are hard to tip over. They give your two-year-old or three-year-old a great start at simply pedaling around the yard or the neighborhood. Your child gets used to … Continue reading

Got Wheels?

Oh dear. It had to happen at some point, but I didn’t expect it to happen so soon. My daughter is riding her two-wheeler bike without training wheels. To me, this is as important a milestone as walking. I remember the freedom that riding a bike gave me as a child. I had wheels, and I was going places. I would wander around the neighborhood, which was actually simply a four-block radius from my house. However, it had a forest, a playground, and some great places for bike jumps. I would race around and only occasionally fall off, speeding back … Continue reading

Two Legs, Two Wheels

I saw an ad recently (but can’t remember where) about custom wheelchairs for pets. The image was of a small, white dog smiling/panting in a grassy backyard. Instead of front legs, the dog was resting on a wheeled frame. The caption was something like “I know my person loves me because they got me new legs” — that’s not the exact quote, but that’s the feeling I got. In general, pets are very adaptable. They bounce back from accidents and injuries that might be life-altering for a human. Lost a leg? Animals seem to accept it with a sort of … Continue reading

Christmas Cookie Exchange: Pinwheels and Tassies

My daughter and I finished up the last of our major Christmas baking projects on Friday in anticipation of Saturday’s big cookie exchange. It wasn’t an official cookie exchange, rather a holiday party with a ton of sweet treats (I’m still peeling my 3-year-old off the ceiling). Still, we returned home with a tin full of cookies neither one of us had ever tried before PLUS this afternoon I got my hands on the recipes for two of our new favorites. Take a look: REFRIGERATOR PINWHEEL COOKIES Ingredients: 1-1/2 cups sifted flour 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon baking soda 1/2 … Continue reading

Bike Riding – How to Get the Training Wheels Off

Summer time is here and this year, it will be a momentous summer because we’ll be working diligently with our daughter to shed her training wheels, master her swimming lessons and so much more. When it comes to getting the training wheels off, it can be a real rite of passage for child and parents. Some Kids are Daredevils I know many children in my neighborhood that are real daredevils. I, myself, was a daredevil. I shed my training wheels two days after I got my bike. My motivation lay more in the fact that I broke the training wheels … Continue reading

The Wheels of Justice Turn Slowly

Our adopted children first came into our home as foster children. We were assured that there was a high probability that the birth mother’s rights would be terminated making it possible for us to adopt them. The longer that we knew them and cared for them, the harder it became to even consider that we might not get them. Once a child is taken from the birth mother’s custody, legal proceedings begin. The court has a legal mandate that the matter be resolved in one year. There is an exception to this rule which allows the proceeding to be extended … Continue reading

A Close Call

While I was on my trip to Texas, I had a scary moment involving my baby. I was busy working on getting my bags packed to head home the next day. A family member had graciously offered to keep track of the baby while I packed. He was very needy on that trip and just wanted me the whole time, so I was grateful for the break. I stayed inside the lake house packing and occasionally glanced outside where my kids were on the pier with several adults. I wasn’t worried. I knew they were all being looked after. At … Continue reading

A Swim Lesson for Baby

I have never been a good swimmer. I never took lessons as a child, and so I have never really felt comfortable in the water. So, recently, I started swim lessons for my older two kids. When signing them up, they asked us if we wanted to try out the parent-tot class for free for our baby. Of course, everyone loves something for free, so we signed him up! When we got there, I was a little nervous, but stood on the sidelines watching as my husband took him into the heated pool. He loved the water and hardly made … Continue reading

The Cost of Raising Baby

I read a report from the Agriculture Department’s Center for Nutrition Policy and Promotion that estimates it cost $235,000 for a middle income family to raise a child. Wow, that’s a lot of money. As a single mother if you look at the total it can be completely overwhelming. The largest portion of this is housing taking up 30% of the total. Daycare also takes a big bite as more women work outside the home, and if you are a single mother chances are you don’t have any choice but to work outside the home. Kids are expensive there’s no … Continue reading
