Preschool: What Are Your Expectations?

When thinking about preschool, think about what your expectations are. Do you want your child to be in a school environment, or do you want them to have some stimulating playtime with their peers? When making a decision to put a child into preschool, we often worry about if our child is adequately prepared for “real school”. Many children want their kids to go to a preschool so that they will know how to read by the time they are in Kindergarten, or so that they can meet some sort of undefined goal of where they “need” to be by … Continue reading

Spanish Speaking Kindergarten

Today, my husband and I went to check out a Kindergarten class at the school that my daughter will most likely be attending in the fall. This class was a little different than your average Kindergarten class because it was a Spanish immersion program. I went away with mixed feelings about what was right for my preschooler. In our school district, you have to get ready for Kindergarten early. This includes testing your child for the Extended Learning Program, which can be compared to a gifted program in other school districts. Not every elementary school offers these classes, and they … Continue reading

Knock Knock, Who’s There?

Part of a preschooler’s development is that they like to think of silly things that are not what they are supposed to be. For example, when getting them dressed, you may joke around and put their shoe on their head, and say, “Is this where your shoe goes?” They will most likely get a laugh out of that. One thing I’ve noticed is that my daughter loves knock, knock jokes. She has finally starting to get them, and they are very entertaining for her. She even makes up her own knock, knock jokes that almost always make no sense, but … Continue reading

How Much Fluid Does Your Preschooler Need?

I worry about my daughter not drinking enough all the time. Not too long ago, she got a nasty stomach bug, and we almost had to give her an IV for dehydration. She does not drink a lot at meals either. She will take a tiny sip, and then put it back down on the table. I worry all the time about it. I am the opposite. I always have a drink in my hand. I drink my full 8 glasses of water a day, and then some. I am a chronically thirsty person. While I accept that she may … Continue reading

Credit Card Skimmers

I don’t understand crime. I know that people can reach a desperation point and take things that aren’t theirs because they can’t fill their needs legitimately. I cannot and will not condone it at all. I don’t think I’d be like Javert, but Jean Valjean still should not have stolen that loaf of bread. I read a piece in the paper where the writer said she understood how a woman could steal a baby. The tone of the article was almost forgiving. I couldn’t believe it. I will not carry a successful pregnancy. I miscarried twice and went through years … Continue reading

Is Your Child Fair?

A new study has come out recently stating that preschool aged children have a sense of fairness already. Even children as young as three years old are willing to share with other children, and work together to accomplish a task that will benefit everyone. Is your child fair? I think about this a lot with my daughter. She is almost five, and about to embark on Kindergarten, and I want her to be kind, and sharing, and fair. So, if she most likely already has a sense of fairness, the question is, how can I get her to recognize when … Continue reading

No Need to Worry

I am a worrier. A relentless one, actually. I like to tell my husband that I’m a realist. He doesn’t buy it. I do worry about a lot when it comes to my preschooler. She is a bright, sweet, caring kid. I look at her and I see pure innocence. She gets so thrilled by the smallest thing, and is so willing to give love to everyone around her. She is a people person like me, I think, and doesn’t care too much for being alone. She likes friends. At this age, it is pretty easy to make friends. That … Continue reading

Life is a Game

I don’t know about you, but my preschooler loves games. She has recently discovered board games, but, she is not partial. She will play just about any game that you will engage with her in. We are lucky enough to live 2 blocks from a grocery store. So, to get some afternoon energy out on a rarely “warm” day here in Salt Lake City, we walked to the grocery store to pick up ingredients for something very important for Valentine’s day. Cupcakes. As we were walking back, my daughter decided that rather than wear her coat, she wanted to put … Continue reading
