Finding Family History In Children’s Books

Sometimes, getting a glimpse of what life may have been like for your ancestors is as simple as turning the pages of a book. Surprisingly, even some children’s books can take you on a journey back in time to the places where your ancestors lived. Last week, I randomly happened upon a book which transported my son and I back to 1920’s England, to the world that his paternal great – grandmother may have known during her childhood. When Dylan and I go to the library, we randomly select five or so books from the children’s area. Usually, he grabs … Continue reading

Finding a Sport

Does your preschooler love sports? Mine does. She loves to run around in the garden in the summertime kicking a soccer ball, and she’s actually rather good at it. She loves to dance and we’ve attended dance classes, where she was the least adept in the class. My daughter is getting to the age when she’s interested in trying things out and a feels a little awkward if she doesn’t keep up with the other kids. She’s also getting to the age when many people around our neighborhood enroll their children in sports teams. Now, I did not grow up … Continue reading

Finding Some Support

The other day I received a call from a friend. We had worked on a project together towards the end of 2009 and were finally able to see the fruits of our labor. That day, in his mailbox, he received the in-print version of an article we had worked together on long ago. We had thought that the work we would put into the project would be minimal. As with most things it was much more time consuming than we originally thought it would be. None of that took away from the joy of finally having a finished product. In … Continue reading

One of the biggest reductions in costs for us was baby clothes. In our extended neighborhood, the first impression is that no one is very frugal. Moms … Continue reading

Single Parent Dating—Finding Shared Interests

There is an ongoing debate when it comes to dating and romance—do you look for similarities or differences? When you are a single parent who is also trying to date, time can be precious and it is hard enough to find a little time for ourselves, let alone get out there and “meet people.” A strategy that works well for many single parents is to look for shared interests—whether by meeting people at activities that we already enjoy (church, volunteer work, hobbies, etc.) or find people who like to do similar things so we have a “jumping off point” for … Continue reading
