Drawing on Walls

Last year my mom’s group went to the Museum of Modern Art in Fort Worth, Texas. The outing was called “StrollArt at the Modern.” It was a great time with my friends appreciating modern art. For Jessie’s second Christmas her daddy and I gave her a floor pad and crayons that promote proper hand position. I thought she’d be eager to color. She didn’t show much interest. We bought a number of Aquadoodle books and water pens for a previous foster placement. The former foster daughter loved watching the colors come up with water, dry, and then start again. I … Continue reading

Fine Motor Control: Developing Finger Strength

Small children vary a lot in their ability to create with their hands. While some children may be quite dexterous at age three, others really struggle to create pictures and letters at age five or six. Your four or five-year-old may not even have a dominant hand yet, although this will solidify over the next two or three years. Want to work on your preschooler’s fine motor control? The work doesn’t need to look like work. You’re probably doing things right now that build your child’s finger strength and dexterity. If your preschooler struggles with fine motor control or you … Continue reading

Developing Hand-Eye Coordination

Hand-eye coordination: I seem to lack it, but apparently it is a basic pre-writing skill. That might explain why my handwriting is lousy. However, I digress. If you want to have fun with your preschooler while covertly sneaking some hand-eye coordination skills into the mix, here are a few activities to try. I’m sure that you have more to add! Beading: We love beading around here, with giant colorful wooden beads from Melissa and Doug. You can put them together, take them apart, and just keep on making new necklaces. Pop beads are another standby from the eighties, not recommended … Continue reading

Recognizing Shapes in the Environment

I’m not an artist, and I’m sorry to say that I’ve modeled this inappropriate behavior to my daughter. While I should have been sitting paintbrush in hand in my jaunty beret, I’ve been doing the laundry or reading instead. Woe is us, to lack in artistic endeavors. Of course, my daughter does exercise her creativity in many ways. For a while she was deeply into making sculptures with found objects and tape. The key was the tape. I’m sure that she could have sold them for some large sums of money at a gallery, actually. Anyway, one of the areas … Continue reading

Developing Fine Motor Control: Holding a Pencil or Pen

We’re looking into homeschooling, and I know that one of the things that my daughter needs to work on is her fine motor control. Fine and gross motor control have been a challenge for her, although she has learned how to ride a bike and is now excited to try a lot of the playground equipment that once seemed daunting. However, like many preschoolers my preschooler is not keen to do things simply because I ask her to do so. She’s not a worksheet kid either. Sitting down at a table and being asked to copy letters is not her … Continue reading
