Cereal to Feel Good About that Kids Eat

My children love to eat cereal in the morning or for a snack. For the most part I thought of cereal as just a cut above junk food. Most cereals are filled with sugars, additives, high fructose corn syrup and partially hydrogenated oils. Not the stuff I really need my children eating first thing in the morning or any time for that matter. So, I made the decision to find an organic cereal that they would eat. I found a few brands over the years but not one has made the grade like EnviroKidz. I am thrilled since EnviroKidz is … Continue reading

Mom Approved Cereal

Breakfast in my house equals a bowl of cereal on most days. It is not unusual to find a few of my kids eating cereal as a snack during the day as well. With all this cereal eating going on, I have to be sure I am feeding them quality cereal that is low in sugar and high in nutrition. I have searched the grocery store aisles for the most nutritious but still delicious cereal my kids will eat. One of my family favorites is Barbara’s Bakery’s Puffins cereal. Barbara’s Bakery was generous enough to allow me to review some … Continue reading

Encouraging Your Teens to Eat Breakfast

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day… so the saying goes. But try telling that to your family! My younger brother used to hit the snooze on his alarm clock until the last possible second, then throw on some close and rush off to high school without eating. There are lots of “good” reasons for skipping breakfast: I wanted to sleep in. There’s nothing good to eat. It takes too long to make something. I’m not hungry when I first wake up. I want to lose weight. But research has shown that eating breakfast can help boost concentration … Continue reading

Simple Back-to-School Breakfast: Cereal Cookies

Cookies for breakfast? I’ve already admitted (not so sheepishly) that I’ve started many a day with the sweet circular treats during my lifetime. I’m not bragging about my behavior; rather I try to rationalize it. (Don’t we all?) I figure if the foundation of the cookie consists of ingredients you would find in a traditional breakfast then why feel guilty? The following cookie recipes will not only get your kids out of bed, but they’ll be seated at the kitchen table begging you for breakfast before you retrieve the morning newspaper. The first recipe stars several breakfast favorites, including good … Continue reading

Extreme (Grocery Bill) Makeover: What Happened When We Put Our Kids in Charge

In case this is the first blog you’re reading about this I’ll just give a brief synopsis: Kids eat lots of food. Kids grow–want more food. Parents trying to control budget. Think of brilliant idea. Parents give kids money to buy their own food. Twins don’t count. Four year old only buys snacks. Dinners, fruits and vegetables are free. Does mom lose hair or are kids happily budgeting? And the question everyone is dying to know is did it save any money? We presented our idea to the kids. They were all for it. To them, it’s free money that … Continue reading

Punctuality, Sacrament, and Small Kids

One of the first acting principles I learned when I joined the church was not a gospel principle; it was the concept of Mormon Standard Time. As a punctual person, the constant lateness grated on my nerves. It took me well over a year to adapt to the more laid back approach. I suppose the Lord must have decided I needed to learn patience! Now that I have three children, getting out the door for anything – especially church – seems to take major effort. And given the fact that most of the Sacrament meetings I have attended start five … Continue reading

Getting Ready for Back to School: Smooth Mornings

If there is one thing I dread about the start of a new school year, it is the mornings. I’m hoping other moms of teens can relate to the sometimes frustrating task of trying to wake a sleepy child. Although I may not be able to do much about that, I do know that I can help us get ready for the new school year by at least planning for a smooth morning. The key to this is preparing the night before. It used to be that most of the preparations fell on me. But in the past few years … Continue reading

Natural Organic First Aid: Omyst

It makes little sense to me to use unnatural or harsh chemicals to treat a boo boo. I always prefer to use natural organic products on my children. I have found that natural methods work better and have more applications. Omyst is one such product that is natural, organic, and can be used for a variety of first aid needs. Omyst was developed by Noreen Mulvanerty, RN, MSN, FNP-BC. Noreen is a Family Nurse Practitioner and Herbalist with over twelve years of Emergency Room experience and an expert on wound care. Who better to develop the first 100% natural organic … Continue reading

The Magic of Tylenol

Today has been a difficult day with the toddler. Jessie got up around 8:30 hot, flushed, and feeling less than great. I was concerned that she had contracted Fifth’s Disease because she had that slapped cheek look. We got an email alert from the president of our foster parent group that Fifth’s has been making the rounds of the daycares. My friend who watched Baby E during Jessie’s developmental pediatrician appointment told me earlier that her son had come down with Fifth’s. Baby E was not up yet, so I didn’t have anyone to compare Jessie to. I called the … Continue reading

Puppy Party Fun

Happy birthday, Haka! My neighbor’s dog turned 13 last week and to celebrate she threw him a super soiree that outdid parties I’ve attend for humans. Of course, my neighbor treats her dog like a child—even though he is 91 in human years—so a full-blown pooch party really is not an unexpected move on her part. She requested that human guests dress up like dogs to make the birthday pup feel loved. My 6-year-old wore a white sweat suit that I decorated with black fabric spots and I wore a store-bought doggie Halloween mask, black pants and a black shirt. … Continue reading
